Alenka's Butterfly Birthday Blog Hop and Giveaway

Happy belated birthday, Alenka, and thanks for inviting us to help you celebrate in a special way!

Butterflies represent so many concepts to so many people. Over time, my perception has evolved... of these tiny denizens who live out such short but significant lives. The above maxim sums up my latest reflection on the power of butterflies to adapt.

I have a serious love/love relationship with butterflies (possibly heightened by our never-ending winter... we see very few in my part of the world). So when Alenka Obid of Pepita Handmade suggested a butterfly-themed blog hop on the occasion of her birthday, I was at the head of the line!  I have been collecting a few goodies in preparation.

Earlier this week. I gave a sneak peak at the beginnings of this polymer clay cane (from this tutorial):

... which has been transformed into this small (2" high) sculpted piece (final design to be determined).

Awhile back, I received some beautiful handmade papers from a blogging colleague, Kathy. I will use some for beads, but I thought recycled paper would be a perfect medium for the chameleon butterfly. I don't do a lot of work in paper craft, so naturally I came up with a layered design which can later be developed into jewelry (surprise!)

Handmade paper coated with liquid polymer clay

My final medium is glass. I have been greedily collecting these awesome little lampwork butterfly wings by Kim Snider (a fellow Maritime Canadian):

My photo is sadly not showing the beauty of Kim's wings. If you fancy owning a few of these sweeties (and to ogle her amazing photos), do check out her online Facebook auction starting Thursday April 23rd and running through Sunday night (click on the JOIN key to take part). *Updated to the latest show date*

I forced myself to choose ONE of these wings and created a necklace with copper-wired pearls and a bit of kumihimo:

And here is the gang all together (well, I did have one other project planned, but my little butterfly-shaped metal components didn't arrive in time. *They finally arrived! See this post):

Thank you so much Alenka for inviting us to be part of your Butterfly Birthday Hop!

  1. what a wonderful butterfly collection!!!! really spring is coming!

  2. Wow Monique! You've been really busy. I love your butterfly creations!

  3. you went all out! I love those sweet butterflies you created especially that cane! and your necklace with that glass wing is beautiful!

  4. Monique ~ you were a busy lady! It is easy though, when the hop seriously speaks to you. Your polymer butterfly is incredibly beautiful! I cannot even imagine that work that goes into that. The paper one is adorable. And your necklace ~ oh such a lovely piece! You really brought out the wing colors with your pearls. The whole necklace has such an easy flow to it.

  5. Your butterflies are so pretty and I love your necklace that you made. Have a wonderful day. Hugs and Prayers from Your Missouri Friend Shirley@shirleystitches

  6. Hi Monique,
Wow I love all of your creations especially the polymer clay butterfly sooo pretty. Kim's glass butterfly wings are awesome.

  7. Beautiful pieces, so diverse and each incredibly unique. I have to say I absolutely adore the glass butterfly wing, just stunning!

  8. A wonderful collection of butterflies. Makes me sorry I didn't do the polymer clay work I had hoped to do...but there's always future projects to complete!

  9. Fantastic creations Monique. Your polymer clay cane butterfly wings are lovely but the finished butterfly is simply amazing.

  10. Great job on everything. Thank you for the tutorial also. Well done!

  11. Such beautiful butterfly wings...what a nice collection! Nice job on all the creations, Monique!

  12. I flippin' love Kim's wings! You made a necklace that perfectly showcases the wing.

  13. Monique, all of your creations are beautiful and so different from each other. I had no idea one could make jewellery from paper (apart from the usual paper rolled beads). Your clay work is so good. I would make a brooch from it.

  14. Hi Monique,
thank you very much to be part of my blog hop!!!
You were really busy, the cane is beautiful, maybe I'll try the tutorial too.
I wouldn't say that's paper - it looks like fabrics!! Such a pretty butterfly.
And the glass butterfly wing is really special :-)

  15. Polymer, paper and glass. Wow! Great stuff!

  16. You sure went wild with the butterflies, Monique. Everything is beautiful but I especially like your butterfly well done!! I'm definitely going to try that tutorial. Those lampwork butterfly wings are stunning and you really show them well with your jewelry design skills. Love the necklace!
I hope your weather has finally changed for the better. We're having a lovely warm, sunny weekend here in Hamilton and I just got home from riding my new E-bike!!! I'll write about that someday! Have a great weekend!

  17. Hi Monique, what a beautiful collection of butterflies and wings! It shows the feeling of Springtime! Just love it. Like you, I love Kim's work too! But... let's not forget what you created...! The cane has great colours... Have fun working on your final design (-:
